ACADEMIC
In addition to my freelance work I also teach, focusing on directing, academic studies and visual subtext. I research subjects in this area and publish my thoughts on my non-commercial blog, the Aberrant Reader (in menu above). I also incorporate ideas on technique, practice, and psychoanalysis in my personal films which can be viewed on the Dramatic Work page. At present, I am investigating the practical application of psychoanalytic ideas through visual subtext in the horror genre for a practice-based PhD I wish to undertake in 2024.

AI for Filmmakers Presentation at the Raindance Festival 2023
AI isn’t going anywhere and for independent filmmakers it is already shaping up to be very useful. Using online applications and Adobe software such as After Effects Robert Dee demonstrates tools and workflows for generating and manipulating AI content to create compelling video content.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
I am passionate about digital filmmaking. Unlike videography which simply documents events on camera, my work is about using video, animation, and post-production tools to create meaning and story.
In terms of motion graphics and corporate work I have two decades professional experience in production, post-production and advertising.
I create dramatic work which has been screened at festivals globally. I regularly attend film festivals such as Cannes and Frightfest to keep abreast of developments, make connections and network.
As programme leader for the BA (Hons) pathway I teach filmmaking at one of the UK’s leading film schools, Raindance.
I create content with the latest equipment, undertaking all aspects of the film process from scriptwriting through to directing, editing, colour grading and VFX. I have created festival winning short films, video installations, app demos, corporate presentations, virals and broadcast work. I see no difference between these forms and each of the practices informs and improves upon the others.
It’s all about meaning and story.
